Tim Wins 2008 NRHA Futurity on Shining N Sassy

There weren’t many dry eyes in the crowd at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds at the end of the 2008 NRHA Futurity Finals when the traditional winner’s song, Run for the Roses, began and the new Champion, Tim McQuay, was introduced on Shining N Sassy. Tim’s trademark smile and the hat thrown into the air brought cheers from the audience – and appreciation for the accomplishments of an individual who has literally helped shape the reining world. From training, to breeding, to devoting timeless hours as an advocate of the industry and NRHA, Tim has lifted up the industry.

And at that moment, in the arena, that industry paid homage to him.

When the music faded, and Shining N Sassy (Shining Spark x Sassy O Lena) owner Carol Rose walked out into the arena to join Tim, it was time for the crowd to greet another legend. Together, they stood, representing two lifetimes of achievement in the horse world.

The payoff was lucrative, with the first place check of $150,000. But the win meant much more than money, as it had in the past when McQuay showed Shining N Sassy’s sire, Shining Spark, to everlasting accolades.

In many ways, the night made people look back as well as forward – from Tim’s first Futurity win exactly twenty years earlier on Mr Melody Jac to wondering what the future would hold for a trainer that just never seems to stop being a force in world class competition.

Tim piloted Shining N Sassy to a score of 226.5 in the finals and the beautiful run looked both effortless and exciting. That win made Tim and Mandy the first family team ever to win the Open and Non Pro at the same futurity, as Mandy took home the Non Pro title riding Smart Scat (Smart Starbuck x Scats Frecklefoot x Doctor Freckles). That made it Mandy’s fifth NRHA Futurity Non-Pro title and she collected $41,550 for her win.

With three horses in the Open Finals, Tim also tied himself for 16th place riding Check Your Gun Lady (Dun Gotta Gun x Cee Blair Lady) and A Ruf Master (Lil Ruf Peppy x Shiners Mistress). Both horses scored a 217.5 and are owned by Jerry Kimmell, of Granbury, Texas. Tim’s total take-home paycheck on the three horses totaled $182,097.86.

Congratulations Mandy!

Mandy McCutcheon, the NRHA's first Non Pro and woman Million Dollar Rider, has now won an incredible FIVE NRHA Non Pro Futurity Championships.

Mandy scored 219.5 to win the 2008 NRHA Non Pro Futurity Championship on James McCutcheon's Smart Scat (Smart Starbuck X Scats Frecklefoot), earning $41,550. She also qualified her two other horses for the finals, Dont Miss This Gun and Showtime Gotta Gun - both by Dun Gotta Gun!

The duo's composite scores also took the lead in the Open Futurity and Prime Time Open Division standings with a 441.

Congratulations – Mandy!

Mandy McCutcheon is National Reining Breeders Classic Non Pro Champion and Reserve Champion – Again!

In 2007, Mandy McCutcheon won the Non Pro Championship on Rawhides Banjo, and earned the Reserve title on I Spin For Chics, by Tangys Classy Peppy and out of Chics Koko Angel.

Although Rawhides Banjo was sold after the NRBC last year, I Spin For Chics (owned by Tim and Colleen McQuay) returned for another year and would help Mandy repeat her dual wins.

Coming in as draw 6, McCutcheon and I Spin For Chics marked a 224. Although the pair had some difficulty in the first go, McCutcheon had used strategy to remedy that. “In the go round I was a little nervous – in his way almost. In the finals I just stayed out of the way and let him do his thing,” she said, smiling.

Not that Mandy had any reason not to smile – she had, for the second year in a row – won the Non Pro Championship, which paid $39,220. And for the second year, she also won the Reserve title

The Reserve title came on Dun It Found A Star, a 6-year-old gelding by Hollywood Dun It and out of Dont Miss This also owned by Tim and Colleen McQuay.

“It’s pretty cool,” she said, referring to her score of 223.5. “I’m a little surprised, but very happy.” The Reserve Championship garnered an additional $23,873.

Laurels for Faith: Miss Okie Too Inducted into NRHA Hall of Fame

On Saturday night, February 2, Miss Okie Too was awarded the honor of being inducted into the National Reining Horse Hall of Fame. The spotlight of a Hall of Fame induction was a little out of the ordinary for a mare that has remained quietly in the background - or actually the back pasture – for most of her life!

In 1988, Tim McQuay purchased Miss Okie Too from his client, Otto Schubert, as a youth horse for his daughter, Mandy. Twenty years later, her legacy is assured and her impact on the reining industry is unique.

The 1983 sorrel mare that has always been called “Faith” by the McQuays, was by Muskeg, and out of Glendas Miss Okie. Although talented, soundness issues meant she was only lightly shown by Mandy before joining the broodmare band. The choice for a stallion was easy for the McQuays – their own Hollywood Dun It. As it turned out, Dun It would be the only stallion she would ever be bred to.

And that pairing produced would help propel both sire and dam to greater glory. Most horses garner laurels through performance, center-stage. Miss Okie Too would walk a different path to fame - always with a foal by her side.

Dun It Okie Style was her very first foal and, although they didn’t know it at the time, would lead an incredible line of progeny. Miss Okie Too produced 13 offspring – all by Hollywood Dun It. All of them have been NRHA money earners – averaging over $15,000 per foal, with total earnings of more than $200,000.

That first foal, Dun It Okie Style, made the NRHA Open Futurity Finals with Tim, and then was successful with Mandy, earning $15,625 in NRHA competition.

Next came Faithfully Dun, and he earned nearly $34,000 in NRHA competition. He was also the 1997 Amateur NRHA Non Pro Reserve World Champion.

Okie Dun It Too won the 1996 ANCR Open Championship with Dario Carmignani. Okie Dun It Too has produced earners of over $35,000.

Okie Dun Did It is Miss Okie Too’s top money earner, with $57,814. He has many titles, including a Team USA USEF Gold Medal, plus an NRBC Intermediate and Limited Non Pro Championship.

Dun Being An Okie is not only an NRHA Money earner, he has also excelled in other western disciplines, qualifying for the AQHA World Show in heading, heeling, and reining.

Hollywood Miss Okie was a finalist at the National Reining Breeders Classic and has lifetime earnings of $9,386.

Some Kind Of Dun It has earnings of $14,789, and her offspring have earned nearly $50,000.

The names go on - Yes Ima Dunnit, Okie Just Dun It, A Dozen Dunits, The Deals Here, and Whos Dun It are all NRHA money earners.

Dun Its Déjà Vu, Miss Okie Too’s youngest foal, has earned more than $20,000 with Mandy McCutcheon, including a sixth place finish at the 2007 NRHA Derby. Dun Its Déjà Vu has earnings of more than $22,000.

For the McQuays, it was a thrill to see Faith recognized.

“There are a lot of mares who have done more in the show pen, or had offspring that have won more, but I don’t think there are any who have been more consistent than she has,” noted Tim McQuay.

“When a horse is inducted into the Hall of Fame, that horse has done more than just have an impact on the lives of its owners,” Colleen McQuay added. “Miss Okie Too touched and influenced not only our lives, but also everyone who has had the opportunity to show one of her babies.”

Indeed, the list of those fortunate to ride one of her “Lucky 13” offspring includes names like Monica Hicks, Bonnie Hippensteel, Doug Carpenter, Terry Thompson, Jose Vazquez, Dario Carmignani, Louise Serio, Allison Serio, Cade McCutcheon and Steve Archer and quite a few more.

Miss Okie Too will be the third horse calling McQuay Stables home to be inducted into the NRHA Hall of Fame, following the tradition of Hollywood Dun It and Gunner.

Hollywood Dun It has done it! The National Reining Horse Association Hall of Fame Inductee and All-Time Leading Sire’s offspring just surpassed five million dollars in earnings. Hollywood Dun It’s offspring earnings now total $5,022,984.98. This is one more Hollywood Dun It accomplishment that will go down in the NRHA history books.
